Server Consolidation Using Performance Modeling

چکیده
To fully realize consolidation benefits, businesses must focus on the performance and service levels provided to users in addition to reducing unused capacity. Performance modeling has improved the understanding of the performance of today’s multitier applications.Although traditional analytic and statistical techniques are useful for gaining insight into the performance of individual components, performance modeling lets the analyst further understand the dynamics, dependencies, and interaction among system components and how they contribute to the user’s experience. Here, we present a new way to analyze consolidation alternatives using performance modeling and stepwise refinement, a methodology for efficient and effective modeling. CONSOLIDATION OPPORTUNITIES First, consolidation opportunities can be defined in terms of three primary categories.

Server Consolidation and Grid Computing: Performance Implications
Server consolidation and grid computing are two very different, almost opposite, approaches for addressing system availability and performance issues. The server consolidation process focuses on reducing the physical number of computers and moving the workloads/applications running on them to a smaller set of computers. Grid computing, on the other hand, tries to utilize the existing computer i...

Server virtualization technology provides an alternative for server consolidation by creating a set of logical resources that share underlying physical resources. Xen virtual machine monitor, a popular virtualization solution in Linux world, supports execution of multiple guest operating systems with unprecedented levels of performance and resource isolation. Performance modeling of virtual ser...
متن کاملVirtualization: Concepts, Applications, and Performance Modeling
Virtualization was invented more than thirty years ago to allow large expensive mainframes to be easily shared among different application environments. As hardware prices went down, the need for virtualization faded away. More recently, virtualization at all levels (system, storage, and network) became important again as a way to improve system security, reliability and availability, reduce co...
متن کاملServer Workload Analysis for Power Minimization using Consolidation
Server consolidation has emerged as a promising technique to reduce the energy costs of a data center. In this work, we present the first detailed analysis of an enterprise server workload from the perspective of finding characteristics for consolidation. We observe significant potential for power savings if consolidation is performed using off-peak values for application demand. However, these...

To meet these challenges, organizations must build a single network infrastructure that unifies traditional server I/O, storage, and network operations to more efficiently support evolving business applications. This document describes how a Unified Fabric, proposed by Cisco and NetApp, enables convergence of SAN traffic over an Ethernet and compares the performance of Fibre Channel over Ethern...
